Online Appendix for “Optimal Expectations and Limited Medical Testing”

چکیده
In this appendix we develop a version of the optimal expectations model with continuous action choices. We focus on the case of quadratic loss, and assume symmetry (Ω = Φ). That is, we assume that the loss to moving away from the correct action is the same regardless of the true state. Given that a central argument in favor of this model is that it works with this symmetry assumption, it seems reasonable to develop the continuous action case with this assumption. It is worth noting that an extreme form of asymmetry in which the loss to taking the wrong action if the true state is “sick” is much larger than the loss to taking the wrong action when the true state is “healthy” could cause this to break down. But this is the case in the binary model as well. The goal in this appendix is simply to demonstrate that the assumption that action a is binary is not necessary to derive our results.

Optimal Expectations and Limited Medical Testing: Evidence from Huntington Disease
We use novel data to study genetic testing among individuals at risk for Huntington disease (HD), a hereditary disease with limited life expectancy. Although genetic testing is perfectly predictive and carries little economic cost, pre-symptomatic testing is rare. Testing rates increase with increases in ex ante risk of having HD. Untested individuals express optimistic beliefs about their heal...
متن کاملA Appendix A : Derivation of Optimal
This paper focusses on survey expectations and discusses their uses for testing and modeling of expectations. Alternative models of expectations formation are reviewed and the importance of allowing for heterogeneity of expectations is emphasized. A weak form of the rational expectations hypothesis which focusses on average expectations rather than individual expectations is advanced. Other mod...
متن کاملIdentifying key steps in developing a one-stop shop for health policy and system information in a limited-resource setting: A case study
Background: There is limited understanding about the development of the online one-stop shops for evidence in a limited-resource setting, such as Uganda. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive account of the development process of the online resource for local policy and systems-relevant information in this setting. Methods: We utilized a case study design to address our objective where ...
متن کاملCorrigendum for “Optimal Expectations and Limited Medical Testing”: Updated Figure 4
The purpose of this document is to update and correct Figure 4 from from “Optimal Expectations and Limited Medical Testing: Evidence from Huntington Disease.” This figure documents how perceptions about the risk of HD evolve with symptoms. It compares these perceptions with the “actual risk” of HD based on a Bayesian updating calculation described in the paper. The construction of Figure 4 is c...
